49ers Fancast #77 – Wherein Matt Flynn is not Discussed
Alex Smith may have been discussed prematurely! What a big weekend of stuff and things may change as of this posting. I recorded 34 minutes before I heard about Manningham’s signing and Alex Smith visiting the Dolphins, then had to re-record. And that may change if Alex ends up signing with Miami. Talking all the latest stuff including Peyton Manning.

These last few days have been most turbulent offseason I can remember probably since the ’94 season. First, the Niners front office say that we’re not in the Manning sweepstakes, then they fly to NC and work him out and have the team doc check him out.
Another whopper was learning that Alex Smith was talking to the Dolphins and the Seahawks! What is going on at 4949 Centennial Blvd.? Right after the SB, Harbaugh has been publicly saying that Smith was “his guy” and he wants him back. I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I can say is “stay tuned!”……

Great contract for Brooks… very team friendly and we all know that rush LBs are oh so important to the 3-4. Brooks was 3rd on the team with QB pressures. He also is very solid at containing the strong side run game. Watched enough of Haralson to not want to see more, and we had nothing behind him.
I think SF is full of BS over this offer on the table that Alex passed on. They probably talked the numbers, but never had a chance to put pen to paper before Manning called and then the offer to Alex was essentially pulled back in anticipation of Manning’s decision. I don’t think Alex is upset over the contract that was offered. What ticked Alex off and sent him looking for a job elsewhere was the contract yank-back after Manning called. I agree that this wasn’t on Harbaugh. I think the Yorks +/or Baalke took Manning’s phone call and ran with it.
Manningham’s okay by me… we really needed the veteran depth, as we learned with having to put scrubs in for the playoffs. 2 year deal for Mario.. not bad. Randy Moss for 1 year? No problem there either. High reward… little risk. I wanted Meachem and then Royal, but Meachem was seriously overpaid. Doesn’t look like Ginn will be back, but too bad. He wants to be paid as a WR and returner, but Ginn sucks as a wideout. Overall, I am pretty happy with our re-signings and FA signings.
The QB issue leaves me a bit irritable these days. Ultimately, it now looks like we will either sign Peyton or get Alex back anyway. Good news, as we will be back in the playoffs with Alex or if Manning survives the hits. I would rather Alex or Kaepernick to be the guy that gets us ring #6 too. Bringing in Manning just feels… wrong. So agree with your thoughts on that issue. How the heck is Jim gonna put up with his offense being yanked away by Manning? Manning won’t do Jim’s bidding.
Manning’s mobility, ego, and injury issues bother me. The fact that Alex put up with all of the previous crap… to then have a good year and nearly get us ring #6… to then get treated like this from SF?
Yeah… not feeling this… but I have to stand by my Niners…
( Coby Fleener pro day (Stanford) coming up on the 22nd… still want! )

I think Manning ended up going to where they had the most money to spend on him (Denver). I would have liked to see Manning play for the 49ers but not for 18 Million per year on a 5 year contract.
My prediction is that you will see 3 quarterbacks fighting for the number one spot: Alex Smith, Collin Kaepernick and Josh Johnson. I have no problem’s with Alex Smith and never did, even when I was at games and heard fans booing him off the field. I don’t think any quarterback would have done well in the Mike Singletary/Jimmy Raye era and prior to that we had a poor offensive line.
If Alex Smith decides to go to Miami I think we can do decent with Collin Kaepernick in the game manager role, but next year no matter who is under center the NFC West is much better and we have a tougher schedule.

Jim, I echo the feeling that if Peyton Manning came to the 49ers, it would not “feel” like Manning was a 49er. He would’ve been a Colt in 49ers clothing. With that said, I would still cheer on because the 49ers are my team, first and foremost. But my first choice was, is, and will be to bring Alex back and finish what started last year and before. Of course Peyton is the better QB. But I feel Alex is the right choice right now. At the time of this post, he is also the only option.
On a side note, I disagree with the 94′ championship team not feeling like the 49ers. Did Eddie and Carmen “buy” that championship? I could see how some people feel that way. But other than Deion that year, the core group of 49ers were already in place, Young, Rice, Taylor, Watters, Oline, etc. I have fond memories of that year and that team. It felt right to me.

Hi mate, few minutes after Alex has just resigned and to say the least im over the moon, not sure what the contract is but i can imagine we chucked him a few more $$$ to sweeten the deal ha ha
Right, personally even though i rate alex the guy had that contract 2 weeks before Peyton became a free agent, the niners had a duty to the franchise and the fans to explore that option but time to move on and get Alex another weapon in the draft to go along with Manningham and Moss, who by the way is the most low risk high reward signing in this offseason what 2 million? we got the best out of Carlos on a 1 year deal last season, he could be what Alex needs a large target in the red zone to throw it up and let moss go get it
I totally agree about Wallace as well, even though he is a talent, hes a steeler would rather go draft someone to fit in and become a 49er and with our starting defence all back next season and a full mini camps and OTAs i have no doubt we can make another run next season maybe not a 13-3 season cause our schedule is one of the hardest in football but we can no doubt win the west and get back in the play offs
Anyways its 1am and off to bed, great podcast, keep up the fantastic work

Hi Jim,
Firstly, thanks for the podcast and keep up the good work, I think you are appreciated much more than you realise.
Couldn’t agree with you more on the point of the relative value of Superbowl wins. We will all celebrate a Superbowl win regardless of how it was achieved, but we will tell our kids about a Superbowl won by growing our own stars and watching them develop as opposed to the Miami Heat path to ‘glory’ .
I am also really concerned that we should target O Line back ups in the upcoming draft. The ‘loss’ of Snyder not only leaves a hole on the right, but he was also able to cover at centre for a while. Moving Staley to the right side may help, but who gets the start out of Kilgore, Boone or Person? Thoughts?

It’s laborious to seek out knowledgeable individuals on this subject,
but you sound like you recognize what you’re speaking about!
Thanks
