49ers Fancast #37 – McCloughan Has Left the Building
Talking about the latest developments in 49er land, specifically the sudden departure of Scot McCloughan from the 49ers Front Office. Speculation and rumor abound, and we talk about it all. Also a bit of feedback from Episode 36.
UPDATE: Unbelievable. Just over an hour after I post this and already McCloughan has been quoted by Adam Schein saying, “family needs to come first and I lost sight of that with my position at the 49ers.” This is the first hard evidence we’ve received that indeed, there is not a power struggle at 4949. Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports continues to insist that “sources” suggest VP of Football Operations Paraag Marathe has been “pushing for this” to happen. We at the 49ers Fancast (read: me) will not indulge this speculation unless evidence surfaces that this is true.

Ho. Lee. Crap.

Have you ever read the statements of people who retired suddenly from positions of power? Evidently not. Because “needed to spend more time with your family” is boilerplate copy you pick up on your way to the press conference.
Your powers of denial, bullet-proof. Your powerhouse 49er team is full steam ahead… (Name on stern as ship passes: “Titanic”)
Please. Keep it up. It’s super-entertaining. And if you get bored, find a Bush and apply for a job as his press secretary.

I knew there would be someone to read it that way, and I’m glad you did.
What retiring executives don’t say is, “I lost sight of my family.” Yes, “spend more time with my family” is a legitimate and common reason, but they don’t typically suggest they were irresponsible in their family relationship.
Now, if you have a specific quote from a named source, then we’re talking. Until such a time, it’s all speculation, and people like you can chew on that all you like. As I said, it’s the first “hard evidence” that there isn’t a power struggle. Give me some “hard evidence” that there is, instead of unnamed butt-covering “sources” and your opinion, which is the only thing you have, apparently.

Personally I think its sick that people have to try to find something negative about every unexplainable situation and that its the negative that sells newpapers or fuels blogs. I never really thought that there was a power struggle with the 49ers and I don’t get what is going on here. Where did Singletary ever imply he wanted control for there to be a struggle? As for me I stick with what I read on ESPN confirmed by Matt Barrows. I follow Matt and now Jim on twitter. I’ll stick with the guys I know will give thier opinions in a realistic format not looking for just the negative things to report. I am not worried about the future of this team. I still think we are moving in a good direction.

Well see, I’m the kind of guy who likes to wait for the facts, not “sources.” I like to be in the middle. I’m not going to constantly bash the Yorks and believe the worst about everything. By the same token, I’m not going to be the guy who drinks the Kool-Aid on a Mike Holmgren or Shanahan type of indivudual–some guy from the glory years. I’m going to wait and see how the product on the field is affected by all this, and I’m going to believe Scot McCloughan’s own words since it’s the only real words we have.

The sky is falling! I wonder if this happened 10 years ago, if this would be as controversal a topic. In a day and age where news is reported by the minute, reporters (Kawakami; Cohn) are quick to hype the information to sell their respective articles. Personally, I feel this story is very interesting at the most. Without knowing exactly what happened, this is definately worth talking about. But to say our front office is in shambles is way overblown. I for one am happy to have established execs like Baalke and Gamble remaining with the team. By all accounts, these guys have glowing reputations in the League. As far as statements like “forced out” and “power struggle”, i believe this is just irresponisible reporting. Nothing suggests any of this. If this was a “power move” by Jed, Singletary, or God forbid Paraag, then where is the statement? Wouldn’t there be the new “face” of power stepping up and saying, “Hi, i’m in charge. Scot is out.” Even if all the particulars of a contract termination weren’t settled, I believe someone would step up to complete this “power move”. Instead, all we know is there was a “personal matter”. Which could be anything from Family to illness. But the immediate silence of the organization confirms that this is a sensitive matter and I believe in the end, the 49ers will have handled this appropriately. But this all could change if we draft Tebow and Dez Bryant with our two 1st round picks. Then I’m all aboard the “Chicken Little Sky is Falling” train! Go Niners!

If those were our first two picks I would be right there with you. Oh thats is a scary thought. I don’t think they are bad players but there are definately better fits. Well Said Alex

This is such a non-story at the end of the day. McCloughan wasn’t very good at his job so no drop off in the draft. The 49ers lack of PR skills never stops to amaze me and their decision making from the past 8 years haven’t been the best. Certain reporters over react and like to start things. And certain fans, will defend the 49ers and “drink their cool-aid” no matter what. That is the end of this story.

Tebow and Dez Bryant? lol, who are we the Raiders?
March 27th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
I just read an Article that conflicted itself on ESPN. It was talking about Pacman Jones and discussing the Interest the Niners had in Signing him while at the same time quoting Baalke saying that the Team had Zero interest in Signing him. Personally I don’t understand why Pacman’s Agent is saying we do have interest it will be a sad day indeed when the Niners Sign him. whats your opinion?
March 27th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
We won’t sign Pacman. For what? At this point in his career, he would be the 4th or 5th best CB on the team behind: Clements; Spencer; Brown; and probably Paymah. Only had one overrated year of production (2006). He hasn’t returned kicks since 2006. He’s only going to be 27, but he’s also only played one year of football in the last three years. Not worth the negative attention he’ll bring. Would be a distraction. Almost zero upside. Let him go back to the cowgirls! Or better yet, the Cards.

I’m 100% with Alex on this.
